A car is something that depreciate in value and it cost money to maintain. You cannot buy a car today and sell it at a profit ten years down the line. To most of us a car is a necessity, I agree on that. But will a $80,000 car take you to the supermarket any better than a $20,000 car? Perhaps a bit faster, yes. Unfortunately all over the world people tend to measure wealth with their earthly possessions. They try to impress their neighbors and friends with their fancy cars and houses. Some people spend more on their “Status Symbols” than what they spend on food for their children or education.

It is fine if you are really rich and a $400,000 car will not make a dent in your $20 million bank balance. But unfortunately the most people who fall pray for this craze are the low and middle class income earners.

I am also not one who believes that you must drive an old crappy car if you can afford something better. One certainly feel good if you live in a comfortable house of your own and drive a decent car of your own. If you feel good about yourself you can be much more productive and creative which can lead to even more wealth.

The next time when you consider buying a big fancy car just for the sake of a status symbol, compare the down payment on the car to that of a apartment or house. You rather spend your money to buy yourself another property and rent it out you will find much more value for your money than spending your money on a status symbol. Your status symbol can not look after you after your retirement, but your investments can.

I would much rather drive a normal, comfortable, reliable car and own 3 or 4 properties instead of driving the latest and the greatest without owning any investment properties. My Investment properties appreciate in value, I earn an income from them and my tenant pays the bond and with a car you have to pay the bond yourself, you spend a fortune on maintenance and fuel and it does not earn you an income.

Another thing to consider before buying the next status symbol. Today’s BIG WOW, latest most fancy model will be “one of those old ones” a year later. Have you ever heard in a conversation somebody mention “Oh, you are driving one of those OLD Bee Ems !” , referring to last year’s model.

Many people prefer to buy a new car. Did you know that if you buy a new car, drive it around the block and take it to a dealer to sell it again they will only offer you a price about 30% less than what you just paid for it. Their reasoning is that this is now a second hand car, it is not new anymore. Even though it only has 1 mile on the clock and you bought it ten minutes ago. This only tells me one thing, when you buy a new car you pay $100,000 for $70,000 value.

Personally I prefer a vehicle which is six months to one year old. It already went through the huge initial depreceasion dip and you almost get what you pay for. Such a young car will mostly still be in a good condition with low milage and it will still be under warrenty.
